What is Tea Tree Oil ?

The Melaleuca alternifolia tree, indigenous to New South Wales, Australia, used by Aborigines for centuries is an amazing shrub, with its fluffy, flowery wands, it has proven antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral and antiseptic properties......many research papers have been written proving its efficacy, so much so that it is now widely used alongside conventional medicines to combat infections within hospital settings.

The essential oil is extracted by steam distillation of the leaves and twigs resulting in pale yellow liquid with a nutmeg like smell.

Settlers that came to Australia adopted its use from the Aborigines and by the beginning of the First World War it was the antiseptic oil of choice to treat wounds and fungal diseases - it was used extensively by the Australian armed forces for the treatment of wounds and infection.

Since the 1930's many papers and research studies have been undertaken by the Australian, British and American medical associations, their conclusions are unanimous that Tea tree oil is an effective antifungal, antiviral, antibacterial and antiseptic essential oil , some of the findings are set out in the links below.

               Tea Tree Oil Antifungal Treatment for Foot Infections.

                                    Tea Tree Oil Recipes.  

To treat fungal infections of the feet and toenail fungus tea tree oil has been proven to be extremely effective.

Uses for Tea Tree Oil for Tinea Pedis (atheletes Foot) and Onychomycosis (fungal infection of the toenails). Treat the infection twice daily with one of the methods below.

• Take a cotton wool bud and place 2 drops of tea tree oil on the clean affected skin with the cotton wool bud, leave exposed to dry, continue twice daily until the infection has cleared.
• Tea tree oil lotion.For a larger area mix 10 ml of olive oil with 5 drops of tea tree oil and massage well into the affected clean skin, leave the skin exposed for as long as possible.Continue twice daily until the infection has gone.
• Tea Tree oil foot soak. Immerse the foot (feet) in a bowl of warm water with 10 drops of tea tree oil added to the water, soak for ten minutes. Dry the feet thoroughly with a clean towel and leave exposed for as long as possible. Continue twice daily until the infection has cleared.
• Try to leave feet bare as much as possible, always wear fresh, natural, non-synthetic materials against the skin to discourage recurrence of the problem.
