Homemade Mosquito Repellent - Natural Mosquito Repellents - How to make the best Mosquito Repellent sprays and lotions
Summertime.....and the living is....swat...swat...swat...oww! Instead of the dulcet tones of Louis and Ella there are wails and cries of " I just don't believe it...I've been bitten AGAIN and now my legs look like strawberry jam !! "
It's August, the evenings are delightfully warm unfortunately strappy tops and uncovered limbs are a beacon for hungry midges and mosquitoes who zoom in to feast upon the unwary....those poor folk who are blissed out after the heat of the day...don their finest attire for meals out, dining under the stars....unaware of the onslaught that dusk brings - a telltale whine of the approach and zap you are left with a bite and a welt that feels like the size of a nectarine - usually in the most visible places -faces, ankles, arms and legs and wow do they itch ... so here are my tried and very much tested homemade mosquito repellents !
These natural mosquito repellents are DEET free - as we all know DEET is a nasty, toxic nerve irritant - it repels mosquitoes and kills off wildlife admirably, it is also a skin irritant not really what you want to be slathering liberally over yourself ... a far better option and in my humble opinion the best mosquito repellent is the homemade mosquito repellent ...so here are my recipes for homemade mosquito repellent sprays and lotions for your skin !
Here in Greece at this time of year, every house has great pots of Vasilicos or Basil as we know it, alongside pots of brightly coloured and highly pungent geraniums, beside the windows and doors, to deter the biting beasties from entering, these are widely acknowledged as the best mosquito repellent plants together with lemon balm, lavender, thyme and mint .Another recognized deterrent is garlic - simply rub cloves of garlic into the soles of your feet and eat copious amounts of it in your food ...if you are single ...if you are not you soon will be !! Garlic is one of the best natural mosquito repellents but unfortunately it is not always appreciated by your nearest and dearest - so here are some more fragrant and equally effective mosquito repellent sprays and body lotions.

Moisturizing body lotion - with homemade mosquito repellent. The above essential oil recipes can be added to 100ml of your preferred oil be it olive, almond, jojoba, avocado or coconut for a moisturizing mosquito repellent....just omit the water and vodka and use the oil as a carrier for the oils. If you have been unlucky enough to have been bitten apply neat lavender oil to the affected area,to alleviate the itching and to prevent any sepsis. As always the best mosquito repellent is to cover up in the evenings mosquitoes don't like nibbling through clothing !
Top Tip - Use unscented baby wipes to rub the spray or lotion all over the exposed skin.
